World Athletics U20 Championships: Team South Africa Builds Momentum in Oregon

Team South Africa continued to make encouraging strides at the World Athletics U20 Championships in Oregon, producing a national record, securing several qualifications and gaining valuable experience against the world’s best young athletes.

The standout performance came from the mixed 4x400m relay team of Isabella Gunter, Zante van de Merwe, Abelines Schoeman and Ryno Riekert. The quartet first booked their place in the final by clocking a South African U20 record of 3:22.12 in the heats. They returned for the final with another determined performance, improving the national record to 3:21.48 to finish sixth in the world—a remarkable achievement that underlines the depth of South Africa’s rising athletics talent.

In the women’s 100m, Rume Burger safely advanced through the heats after running 11.56 seconds. She narrowly missed out on a place in the final after finishing fourth in her semi-final in 11.53, ending a promising campaign against a highly competitive field.

Ashlynn Norman also impressed by qualifying for the women’s long jump final with a leap of 6.11m, giving South Africa another finalist to cheer on. Her final will be at 04:13.

The women’s 800m saw Carise van Rooyen and Andrea Steynberg represent the country in the heats. Van Rooyen produced an impressive 2:06.52 to progress to the semi-finals, while Steynberg’s 2:13.52 was not enough to advance.

In the discus throw, both South African athletes delivered determined performances. Mila Eukermann recorded a best throw of 50.50m, while Chris-Maria Nel achieved a personal best of 50.98m. Although neither athlete reached the final, Nel’s personal best was a positive milestone on the international stage.

With several encouraging performances already in the books, Team South Africa now shifts its focus to another busy day of competition in Oregon.

The evening session begins with the women’s shot put at 19:00 (SA time), where Fortune Cletus-Okolo and Johanna Lampreght will be in action. Megan Nieman and Tumi Ramokgopa will contest the 400m hurdles heats at 19:48, followed by the mixed 4x100m relay at 21:35.

Christie Loggenberg and David Strong will line up in the 400m heats at 22:21, while the day’s programme concludes with Laura Stander and Andrea Steynberg competing in the 1500m heats at 04:03 on Friday morning (SA time).

With a national record already rewritten twice, a world final appearance secured and more medal opportunities still ahead, Team South Africa has made an encouraging start to the championships and will look to build on that momentum over the coming days.
