At just 23 years old, Isabella Alexa Ludwig has emerged as one of South Africa's brightest young midfielders. Her composed performances, technical ability and maturity beyond her years have earned her a place in Banyana Banyana's squad for the 2026 CAF Women's Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON), where she will represent South Africa on the continent's biggest stage.

From Domestic Football to the National Team

Ludwig's rise through South African women's football has been built on consistency and impressive performances in the domestic game. After helping TUKS Ladies reach the 2022 Sasol League National Championship final, she joined Mamelodi Sundowns Ladies in 2025, where she has continued her development in one of the country's most successful clubs.


Her performances did not go unnoticed by the national team selectors. Ludwig made her senior Banyana Banyana debut against Namibia during the 2024 COSAFA Women's Championship on 22 October 2024, marking the beginning of her international journey.


Less than two years later, she has achieved another career milestone by earning selection to South Africa's squad for the 2026 WAFCON, a testament to her continued growth and the confidence the technical team has in her abilities.


Playing Style

Ludwig is a technically gifted central midfielder who thrives on controlling the rhythm of a game. Comfortable receiving the ball under pressure, she links defence and attack with intelligent movement and accurate passing.


Her excellent positional awareness allows her to intercept play and provide defensive cover, while her vision enables her to create attacking opportunities for teammates. Combined with an impressive work rate, Ludwig contributes effectively on both sides of the ball, making her a dependable presence in midfield.


Her calm decision-making and ability to dictate possession have already made her an important player at club level, qualities that will be valuable for Banyana Banyana during WAFCON.
