WAFCON Spotlight: Players to Watch – Ronnel Donnelly

The road to the CAF Women's Africa Cup of Nations has not been straightforward for Ronnel Donnelly, but few players arrive in Morocco with a story that better embodies resilience, determination and perseverance.

Ronnel Donnelly

After spending most of the 2025 season on the sidelines through injury, the Mamelodi Sundowns Ladies forward has fought her way back into contention at just the right time. Two appearances were all she needed to remind everyone of her quality before earning a place in Banyana Banyana's travelling squad for WAFCON, where she wears the number 17 jersey.

Her final audition came in the Hollywoodbets Super League against TS Galaxy Queens. Introduced from the bench, Donnelly marked her return in trademark fashion by scoring in Sundowns' 2-0 victory—a timely reminder of the clinical finishing that has made her one of South Africa's brightest attacking prospects.

For Donnelly, the Hollywoodbets Super League once again proved to be the perfect platform to rebuild confidence and match fitness before stepping back onto the international stage.

From Wentworth to WAFCON

Born in Wentworth, KwaZulu-Natal, the 22-year-old has enjoyed a rapid rise through South African football. Her journey gathered momentum at the University of the Western Cape (UWC), where she established herself as one of the country's most exciting young forwards. Between 2022 and 2025, Donnelly became a standout performer in university football, combining explosive pace with intelligent movement and an instinctive eye for goal.

Her exceptional 2024 campaign saw her crowned the Women's Varsity Football Player of the Tournament while finishing as the competition's top scorer with five goals. She also played a pivotal role in helping UWC finish runners-up in the SAFA Women's League, performances that ultimately earned her a move to continental giants Mamelodi Sundowns Ladies.

Ronnel Donnelly

 A Natural Goalscorer

Donnelly possesses all the qualities of a modern striker. Her pace stretches defensive lines, her movement creates space in dangerous areas and her composure in front of goal allows her to convert chances with impressive consistency. Equally important is her willingness to press from the front, making her an asset both in and out of possession.

Those attributes have quickly made her one of the most exciting young forwards in the Hollywoodbets Super League.

International Breakthrough

Having represented South Africa at Under-17 level between 2020 and 2021, Donnelly's senior international opportunity arrived in 2025. She made her Banyana Banyana debut against Ghana before announcing herself on the continental stage just a week later, scoring her first senior international goal in South Africa's emphatic 4-0 victory over Mali.

Despite an injury-interrupted domestic season, her return to fitness and sharp performances for Sundowns ensured she remained firmly in the national selectors' plans.

The Hollywoodbets Super League Advantage

Donnelly's story highlights the importance of the Hollywoodbets Super League in preparing players for international football. The competition provides returning players with the opportunity to regain rhythm, confidence and competitive sharpness against some of the country's best talent. For Donnelly, those valuable minutes in Sundowns colours were enough to prove she was ready for another opportunity in green and gold.

As Banyana Banyana look to defend their continental title and secure qualification for the 2027 FIFA Women's World Cup, players like Donnelly demonstrate the depth of talent being produced and developed through South Africa's domestic league.

One to Watch

At 22, Ronnel Donnelly's journey is only just beginning. With youthful energy, a proven goalscoring instinct and the confidence gained from overcoming adversity, she has the ability to become one of South Africa's most important attacking players over the coming years.

If her comeback is anything to go by, WAFCON could provide the stage for another breakthrough moment—and another chapter in the rise of one of the Hollywoodbets Super League's brightest stars.
