WAFCON Spotlight: Players to Watch – Zoe October

At just 18 years old, Zoe October has become the youngest player in South Africa's squad for the 2026 CAF Women's Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON), marking another milestone in what is shaping up to be a remarkable rise through the ranks of South African women's football.

The University of the Western Cape (UWC) attacking midfielder heads to Morocco as part of the Banyana Banyana travelling squad, highlighting not only her immense talent but also the growing impact of the Hollywoodbets Super League in developing the country's next generation of stars.

For October, the call-up is the reward for years of dedication and steady progression through the national team pathway. Having already represented South Africa at youth level, she now finds herself sharing a dressing room with some of the country's most accomplished footballers as Banyana Banyana defend their continental crown and chase qualification for the 2027 FIFA Women's World Cup.

A Bright Future Emerging at UWC

October's rapid rise has been fuelled by impressive performances for UWC in the Hollywoodbets Super League.

Making her senior league debut on 23 May 2026 against TS Galaxy Queens, the teenager immediately announced herself by scoring a crucial equalising header in a 2-2 draw. Since then, she has featured in all five league matches for UWC, making four starts while continuing to earn the trust of the coaching staff.

Her seamless transition into senior football is a testament to the quality of competition offered by the Hollywoodbets Super League, where young players are regularly challenged against experienced internationals and seasoned professionals.

A Midfielder Built for the Modern Game

Operating primarily as an attacking midfielder, October combines technical quality with tactical intelligence well beyond her years.

Her greatest strengths lie in her vision and creativity, consistently finding pockets of space to unlock opposition defences with incisive passing. Equally impressive is her relentless work rate, pressing aggressively without possession before quickly transitioning into attacking phases.

Another standout quality is her composure. Despite her age, October displays remarkable calmness in possession and has shown she can handle the pressures that come with representing South Africa at national team camps.

Her versatility further enhances her value. Whether deployed as a traditional number 10, on either wing or even as a false nine, she adapts comfortably to different tactical systems.

Coaches within the national setup have repeatedly identified her as one of the country's brightest young prospects—a player with the confidence and mentality to embrace football's biggest occasions.

Learning From the Best

Although she is the youngest member of the WAFCON squad, October enters an environment filled with experienced leaders who have competed at the highest level of African and world football.

Training alongside established stars offers invaluable exposure, allowing her to accelerate her development while learning what is required to succeed consistently at international level.

Her leadership qualities have already begun to emerge. During preparations for the 2025 Hollywoodbets COSAFA Women's Championship, October represented the squad in media engagements, speaking confidently about the team's mentality ahead of a crucial semi-final against Zimbabwe.

Those moments demonstrated maturity that extends beyond her performances on the pitch.

The Hollywoodbets Super League Pathway

October's selection is another example of the important role the Hollywoodbets Super League continues to play in strengthening Banyana Banyana.

The league has become South Africa's premier platform for identifying, developing and preparing players for international football. Week after week, young talents compete alongside seasoned internationals, gaining invaluable experience before stepping onto the continental stage.

For October, the league has provided the perfect environment to showcase her abilities while accelerating her growth into senior football.

Being selected for WAFCON is not the destination—it is the beginning.

If her trajectory continues, South African football may well be witnessing the emergence of its next midfield star, with the Hollywoodbets Super League serving as the launchpad for a career that could define the next generation of Banyana Banyana.
