Ibanathi Msindo’s football journey is a powerful story of talent, sacrifice and unwavering family support. The University of Pretoria (UP-Tuks) midfielder has established herself as one of the standout players in the 2026 Women’s Varsity Football campaign, but her journey to the big stage began on the streets of Pampierstad in the Northern Cape.
Born on 25 July 2002 and raised in Pampierstad, Msindo developed a love for football from an incredibly young age. Barely three years old, she was already kicking a ball around, and by the age of seven, she was playing street football with her nephews. Despite often being the only girl among the boys, Msindo more than held her own. Her passion for the game continued to grow, eventually leading her to club football.
At 15, Msindo joined Nicko Taurus Academy after she and her mother moved to Kagiso on the West Rand, partly to give her greater opportunities to pursue her football dream. However, tragedy struck just as Msindo was beginning to settle into her new environment. Her mother passed away, leaving the young footballer facing an uncertain future.
With opportunities for talented female footballers limited in the Northern Cape, Msindo turned to her grandmother, Nomakhaza Modisapudi. In a remarkable display of love and sacrifice, her grandmother made the life-changing decision to move to Gauteng to look after her granddaughter and ensure that Msindo could continue pursuing her dream. That sacrifice has become an important part of Msindo’s journey. Today, she is not only a talented footballer but also a Tuks education student pursuing a Bachelor of Education (B.Ed), combining her academic ambitions with her passion for football.
Making Her Mark at Varsity Football
Msindo has continued to develop into an influential midfielder for UP-Tuks Women’s Football, with her performances earning recognition on one of South Africa’s biggest university football stages.
Her standout moment came in the 2026 Women’s Varsity Football semi-final, where she produced a moment of individual brilliance, scoring a stunning long-range free-kick to help Tuks secure their place in the final. Her performance earned her the Player of the Match award as well as the SportPesa Goal Rush Award, recognition of the quality and importance of her spectacular strike.
Her consistency throughout the campaign has also seen Msindo nominated for the 2026 Varsity Football Women’s FNB Player of the Tournament, underlining her impact throughout the competition.
From kicking a ball in the streets of Pampierstad to producing match-winning moments on the Varsity Football stage, Msindo’s journey is a testament to perseverance. Behind every pass, tackle and spectacular goal is a story of a young woman who refused to let adversity define her future.
And at the heart of that journey stands a grandmother who made an extraordinary sacrifice to ensure her granddaughter could keep chasing her dream.
For Ibanathi Msindo, the journey is far from over. The midfielder is now one of Tuks’ key figures as they continue their pursuit of Varsity Football glory.
