Mamelodi Sundowns Ladies are set for another test on the African stage as they prepare to face Egyptian side FC Masar in their opening match of the 2026 CAF Women’s Champions League on Sunday. Sundowns Ladies group
The South African side heads into the competition with a clear objective of competing for the continental title and adding another trophy to its growing collection. Having previously won the competition in 2021 and 2023, Sundowns understand what it takes to succeed at this level.
Their opening encounter, however, will not be an easy assignment. FC Masar will have the advantage of playing in front of their home supporters and will be equally determined to begin their campaign with a positive result.
The two sides are familiar with each other, having met at the 2024 edition of the competition, where FC Masar claimed a 1-0 victory. That result adds an interesting dimension to Sunday’s meeting, with Sundowns having an opportunity to respond and start this year’s campaign on a stronger note.
The group also features Moroccan side FUS Rabat and Cameroon’s Lekié Football Filles, making qualification for the semi-finals a demanding task. With only the top two teams progressing from the group, every match will carry significant importance.
The tournament brings together eight clubs from across the continent, with the final scheduled for 15 November. For Sundowns, the focus will be on taking each match as it comes and producing the performances needed to challenge for another African title.
Sunday’s encounter at the Suez Canal Stadium will therefore be an important first step in their campaign, as they look to begin their journey with a positive result.
