Nigeria lead Africa’s charge as FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup knockout race heats up

African football received a major boost at the FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup Morocco 2026 after Nigeria secured their place in the Round of 16 with an impressive 3-1 victory over defending champions Korea DPR.

The result was one of the biggest talking points of Friday’s action, as Nigeria showed their ability to compete against the best teams in the world. After opening their campaign with a defeat to Poland, the Nigerian side responded with back-to-back victories to advance to the knockout stage.

Nigeria’s progress comes as the tournament’s group stage continues to produce important results, with several nations already securing their places in the last 16. Spain, the United States, China PR, Japan, Germany, Argentina, Poland and Brazil are among the teams to have progressed, alongside Nigeria and Korea DPR.

For Africa, Nigeria’s achievement is particularly encouraging. Beating the reigning champions sends a strong message about the continent’s potential at youth level and gives the team confidence heading into the next stage of the competition.

Ghana have also provided a memorable moment, fighting back to draw 3-3 with Brazil after a difficult start to their campaign. The result demonstrated their determination and ability to challenge established football nations.

Hosts Morocco, meanwhile, have experienced a more challenging tournament after an encouraging opening victory against New Zealand. Zambia and Kenya have also faced tough opposition, underlining the level of competition at a global tournament where every match offers valuable experience.

With the knockout stage approaching, attention will turn to whether more African teams can join Nigeria in the Round of 16. The remaining group matches will be crucial for sides still hoping to extend their stay in Morocco.

Nigeria’s victory has already given African supporters a reason to celebrate. Their next challenge will be to carry that momentum into the knockout rounds, where the margin for error becomes even smaller and every performance matters.
