Africa’s campaign at the FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup Morocco 2026 got off to a mixed start on Saturday, with hosts Morocco recording an emphatic victory while Nigeria suffered a 2-1 defeat to Poland in their opening Group B encounter.
Morocco impressed in front of their home supporters, beating New Zealand 4-0 after a dominant second-half performance at the Mohammed VI Football Complex in Rabat.
The hosts struggled to find a breakthrough in the first half but raised their intensity after the break to take control of the match. Morocco eventually opened the scoring in the 57th minute before doubling their advantage through an own goal in the 70th minute.
Two further goals followed, including a penalty in the closing stages, as Morocco wrapped up a convincing victory to give their campaign a positive start.
The result provides an important boost for the hosts as they look to progress beyond the group stage and make the most of playing on home soil.
Nigeria, meanwhile, will be looking to bounce back after falling to a 2-1 defeat against Poland in Group B.
Poland took the lead from the penalty spot in the first half before extending their advantage after the break. Nigeria responded with a goal in the closing stages, offering hope of a comeback, but they were unable to find an equaliser before the final whistle.
The defeat leaves Nigeria with work to do as they look to collect their first points of the tournament. They will need a stronger attacking performance in their remaining group-stage matches to keep their qualification hopes on track.
With five African nations competing in Morocco, the continent will be hoping for a strong showing from its representatives. The tournament provides an important platform for young players to gain international experience and test themselves against some of the world's best emerging talent.
Morocco have made a positive start in front of their home supporters, while Nigeria will be determined to respond after their opening setback.
