Banyana Banyana determined to finish the job against Madagascar

Banyana Banyana return to action in Bloemfontein on Tuesday evening with one clear objective, to secure their place in the next round of the 2028 Los Angeles Olympic Games qualifiers.

South Africa face Madagascar at Free State Stadium, carrying a healthy 4-0 advantage from the first leg. The emphatic victory has put Desiree Ellis’ side in a strong position, but the former African champions will know that the job is not complete until they have delivered another solid performance on home soil.

Mamelodi Sundowns forward, Ronnel Donnelly was the star of the opening encounter, finding the back of the net three times, while an own goal added to Madagascar’s misery. The result highlighted Banyana’s attacking quality and their ability to take their chances when opportunities presented themselves.

Tuesday’s return leg offers South Africa another chance to demonstrate their strength and consistency as they continue their pursuit of a place at the LA 2028 Olympic Games.

The latest squad development is the call-up of Mamelodi Sundowns Ladies forward Lelona Daweti, whose inclusion gives Ellis another attacking option. Daweti has established herself in domestic football, and the opportunity to represent her country provides another chance to contribute at international level.

Her call-up adds another dimension to the squad as Banyana look to maintain their attacking threat and build momentum during the qualification campaign, despite their comfortable advantage, South Africa cannot afford to underestimate their opponents. Madagascar will be determined to respond, while Banyana will want to ensure that their performance matches the expectations of playing in front of their home supporters.

For Ellis and her players, the challenge is to remain focused, manage the game effectively and take another step towards their Olympic ambitions, with progression within reach, Banyana Banyana will be eager to make their home advantage count and continue building towards what they hope will be a successful qualification campaign.
