Varsity Netball 2026:UJ NETBALL 46 - 39 Maties

The University of Johannesburg Varsity Netball team won head straight into the top four following their emphatic win over Maties in the opening round on Sunday evening and +7 PD. UJ did it last year and managed to do it again, recording back-to-back victories against Stellenbosch.UJ triumphed by working as a team.46 goals scored is not their best attacking game,but holding Maties to only 39 at home is a statement.

HOW UJ WON THE GAME

Defence Won It.Their GK Cornelia Mupenda and GD Boitumelo Mahloko were outstanding.They forced Maties shooters to take shots from outside their comfort zone.Maties normally score 50+ at home but they kept them to 39.That means at least 8-9 gains(interceptions + rebounds )from their defensive circle.

Composure in Q4

The game was close until the last 10 minutes.Maties were pushing to get within 7 goals to steal a bonus point.UJ stayed calm,kept possession,and didn't force risky passes.That's championship mentality.

Q: UJ gave Maties chances to score first but they made sure that they secure points in the first quarter.

Q: Maties defended strong limiting UJ to score more points.Subs were made on the side of UJ which resulted in points being added on the scoreboard.

Q: UJ had already opened a gap ahead of Maties, which allowed them freedom to to start playing structure.

Q: It seemed like it was a walk in the park regardless of the fact that Maties had to win as they were celebrating 100 years of Netball on their side


WHAT UJ DID WELL

Defensive Unit:GK,GD,WD worked as one Maties had no easy feed.

Mental Toughness:They didn't panic when Maties crowd was loud in Q2.

Game Management:Kept the lead at 7, denied Maties momentum.


KEY PLAYERS 

Player of the Match: Boitumelo Mahloko (Goal Defender).She came back from an injury to set standards,shut down Maties Goal Attacker and re-introduced herself to the viewers.


Owethu Ngubane: She was moved to Goal Shooter (GS) in the second quarter and was on form as all balls added points on the scoreboard.
