Experienced UJ Meets Ambitious UP In Varsity Football Final

The stage is set for a thrilling Varsity Football Women’s final, with the University of Pretoria (UP TUKS) set to face the University of Johannesburg (UJ) after both sides secured hard-fought victories in their respective semi-finals.

The final is scheduled for Wednesday, 19 August at 19:00 at UJ Stadium, Soweto Campus, where the two universities will battle for Varsity Football women’s supremacy. 

UJ booked their place in the final with a narrow 1-0 victory over the University of the Western Cape (UWC), exacting revenge for last year’s final defeat against the same opponents. The tightly contested encounter appeared destined for a stalemate before Lindelwa Mabuza struck at the death to send UJ through.

The victory means coach Nthabeleng Modiko’s side will return to the final for the second consecutive year, giving UJ another opportunity to challenge for the title after falling short against UWC in last year’s decider.

Meanwhile, University of Pretoria (AmaTuks) secured their place in the final after edging Tshwane rivals TUT 6-5 on penalties following a 1-1 draw after 70 minutes of regulation time. Ibanathi Msindo scored a stunning long range free-kick to give Tuks an early lead before the TUT skipper Sibongile Ntoane responded with a low driven craker from a setpiece in the 16th minute to level matters.  

The Tshwane derby lived up to its billing, with neither side able to find a decisive winner during normal time. The contest ultimately had to be settled from the penalty spot, where AmaTuks held their nerve to claim the bragging rights and book their place in the final.

The result marks a significant milestone for the Arcadia-based outfit, who will make their third appearance in the Varsity Football Women’s final following 2014 and 2021. Their progression caps off an impressive campaign and gives them an opportunity to make history by lifting the trophy for the first time ever in the competition.
