Varsity Netball 2026 got off to an exciting start on Sunday at the Coetzenburg Indoor Centre in Stellenbosch, with four opening-day matches delivering big wins, close contests and plenty for supporters to talk about.
From the defending champions making an early statement to a three-goal thriller between two of the competition's biggest names, Day 1 showed that the race for the title is already shaping up to be an interesting one.
Coaches set the tone
For the coaches, the opening round was about more than simply getting a win on the board. It was the first opportunity to see how their teams would respond to the pressure and intensity of tournament netball.
Defending champions NWU wasted no time reminding everyone why they are the team to beat. Coach Elsunet du Plessis' side produced the biggest win of the day, beating Madibaz 74–31.
UJ also made an early statement under coach Bongiwe Msomi, holding their composure to beat hosts Maties 46–39.
With both teams starting their campaigns with convincing wins, the pressure will now be on them to maintain that momentum as the tournament progresses.
The fans and the conversation
The atmosphere inside Coetzenburg was just as important as what happened on court.
The Maties–UJ clash was played in front of a packed crowd, with the home supporters helping Maties fight their way back into the game during the second half.
That university pride also carried onto social media, with supporters rallying behind their teams and celebrating the return of Varsity Netball. The excitement around the tournament was particularly evident around CUT's debut, as well as the highly anticipated clash between Kovsies and Tuks.
With the tournament continuing to build its online presence through its #iLOVEit campaign, the conversation around Varsity Netball is already extending beyond the court.
Four games, four different stories
Maties 39–46 UJ
The opening game set the tone for the day. UJ took control early and built an advantage before Maties produced a strong second-half response. The hosts had the crowd behind them, but UJ remained composed to secure a seven-goal victory.
NWU 74–31 Madibaz
NWU delivered the most dominant performance of the day. The defending champions led 44–17 at halftime and continued to pile on the pressure after the break, eventually winning by 43 goals.
Wits 48–43 CUT
CUT's Varsity Netball debut was competitive despite ending in defeat. Wits' experience ultimately helped them secure a five-goal victory, but CUT showed enough to suggest they will not simply make up the numbers in their first season.
Kovsies 58–55 Tuks
The closest game of the day belonged to Kovsies and Tuks. Tuks held a narrow 28–26 halftime lead before Kovsies turned the game around in the third quarter. The Free State side held their nerve to claim a three-goal win in a match that could easily have gone either way.
The tournament has only just begun
After one round, it is too early to make predictions about who will lift the trophy, but Day 1 has already given us plenty to watch.
NWU have made their intentions clear, UJ have started strongly, Kovsies have survived a heavyweight battle, Wits have secured an important win, and CUT have shown that they belong on this stage.
The fans are here, the coaches have made their first moves and the conversation has officially shifted from anticipation to competition.
