Mamelodi 11 Stars Hold the Key to Chiefs-Wits Title Race

The race for the Gauteng Women’s Sasol League title is reaching a decisive stage, with Wits University Ladies and Kaizer Chiefs Ladies battling for top spot and a place in the national playoffs.

Wits will face Mamelodi 11 Stars on Saturday before the Mamelodi-based side travels to the Kaizer Chiefs Village in Naturena to take on Amakhosazana on Sunday at 14:00.

Kaizer Chiefs is currently second on the standings on 64 points after 26 matches, while third-placed Wits University have collected 62 points from 24 games. The Clever Girls therefore have two matches in hand and remain firmly in contention to overtake their rivals at the summit.

Wits’ meeting with Mamelodi 11 Stars on Saturday will be followed by Chiefs’ clash with the same opponents the following afternoon, making the two fixtures particularly significant in the title race.

With Mamelodi Sundowns Ladies unable to gain promotion to the Hollywoodbets Super League, the battle for Gauteng supremacy has effectively become a two-horse race between Chiefs and Wits.

Although Sundowns’ position in the league does not directly affect promotion, Mamelodi 11 Stars could have a significant say in determining who finishes at the top. Sitting eighth on the table, they have the opportunity to disrupt the ambitions of both title contenders in the space of one weekend.

Wits’ two games in hand give the Braamfontein outfit a valuable advantage as the season enters its final stretch. However, Chiefs remain firmly in the hunt, with the Naturena-based side able to draw confidence from the goalscoring form of striker Lumka Qhekeka.

With the title race finely poised and both contenders facing the same opponent within 24 hours, this weekend could prove pivotal in deciding who earns the right to represent Gauteng in the national playoffs on the road to the Hollywoodbets Super League.
