Nthabiseng Nini: A dream debut as Proteas Women Open Zimbabwe Series with Six-Wicket Victory

Bulawayo, Zimbabwe — The Proteas Women made an impressive start to their historic five-match T20I series against Zimbabwe, securing a convincing six-wicket victory at Queen’s Sports Club in Bulawayo on Friday.

South Africa bowled Zimbabwe out for 116 in 19.3 overs before chasing down the target with ease, reaching 117/4 in just 13.1 overs to take a 1–0 lead in the series. The opening match also provided a memorable moment for Nthabiseng Nini, who marked her senior international debut with a brilliant bowling performance.

The 21-year-old Warriors seamer wasted no time making her presence felt at international level, finishing with outstanding figures of 3 wickets for 17 runs from 3.3 overs, at an impressive economy rate of 4.85.

Nini’s debut was particularly significant given the journey that led her to the Proteas. The former South Africa Under-19 player earned her maiden national call-up for the historic series after producing strong performances for the SA Emerging Women. Cricket South Africa confirmed that the Zimbabwe tour would provide an opportunity for a number of young players to gain valuable international experience. She repaid that faith immediately, playing a key role in restricting the hosts to a modest total and becoming one of the standout performers of the opening encounter.

Zimbabwe’s 116 never looked enough once South Africa’s chase got underway. The Proteas maintained a strong scoring rate throughout their innings, reaching the target with 41 balls to spare. The emphatic victory gives South Africa an early advantage in a series that represents a significant moment for women’s cricket in the region. This is the first-ever bilateral T20I series between Zimbabwe and South Africa, with all five matches being played at Queen’s Sports Club.

The series continues on Sunday, 13 September, followed by matches on 15, 17 and the final T20I scheduled for Saturday, 19 September in Bulawayo.

For the Proteas, the opening victory provides the perfect platform to build momentum. For Nini, meanwhile, her remarkable debut has announced her arrival on the international stage in emphatic fashion.
