Netball Player Profile: Christie- Marie Coetzee

In a tournament full of big names, North West university ( NWU Eagles ) defender Christie-Marie Coetzee is quietly building the best season of her life. No hype, just interceptions and Player of the Match awards.

Full Names: Christie- Marie Coetzee

Team: North-West University (NWU Eagles, defending champions of Varsity Netball)

Position: Goal keeper (GK) / Goal defender (GD)

Province: North West province

For years she was a squad player in the shadows of older Eagles stars, but 2026 changed that. NWU Head Coach called her name for Round 1 against Madibaz at Stellenbosch. NWU smashed Madibaz 74-31 where she was named Player of the match. That was statement number one. The second statement came in Round 5 vs Central University of  Technology. CUT fought hard, trailing by 7-13 after Quarter one. NWU needed a strong defence and Coetzee delivered. The final score was  60-37 to Eagles where she claimed her second player of the Match.

Coetzee is part of the NWU team that is capitalizing on height advantage and superb defensive display. She lives to prove that making it to the top is not about winning every final, it is about showing up after you lose one.

Achievements:

2024: North West U18 Top 35, Telkom Nationals

2026: NWU Eagles Senior Team, defending champs

2x Player of the Match, Varsity Netball (Round 1 vs Madibaz, Round 5 vs CUT)

She is not yet a Spar Protea or a Dessert Jewel player, but  she is doing what every defender dreams of, which is making the circle hers. If NWU Eagles lift the trophy again this year, her name will be on the wall, literally. From Gimnasium school courts to Player of the Match on national TV. Zero hype to double player of the match. That is Christie-Marie Coetzee ,the Eagles’ wall.
