Cornelia Mupenda: From Varsity Netball to Singapore

At the age of 23, Cornelia Mupenda  had lost two Varsity Netball finals with the University of Johannesburg (UJ Orange Army) at Rembrandt Hall. She lost an Africa Netball Cup semifinal and never touched a gold medal in university netball. She also became one of only two Namibians in history to be signed to a professional league overseas, the Singapore Netball Super League.

Mupenda was born 24 January 2001 in a small town called Omaruru, Namibia. Her breakthrough was making Namibia’s U-12 national team, that is when she knew netball was not just school sport. She started at Afrocat Lions Netball Club with no sponsors, then she got a scholarship to University of Johannesburg in 2021. When she arrived at UJ, the Orange Army was at the bottom of Varsity Netball log. Together with  Boitumelo Mahloko,they changed it.


Mupenda joined UJ as a first-year PR student in 2021 alongside fellow Namibian Monica Gomases. Under coach Bongiwe Msomi, she rose quickly and slowly started to become a household name. She is known for her height, athleticism and remaining calm under pressure. She led UJ to their first-ever Varsity Netball semi-final and then two consecutive finals.


Her breakthrough came on the international stage representing Namibia at the Pent Series (2021), Africa Netball Cup in Swakopmund, and PacificAus Sports Netball Series in Australia. That was were she got scouted and stepped into her new netball journey that would unfold like a dream come true. In 2025 she joined a team in the Singapore Super League, marking her first international career.


Achievements:

2023: Led UJ to first-ever Varsity Netball semi-final  (UJ lost the final 63-61 to the University of Pretoria)

2024: Led UJ to their second consecutive Varsity Netball final (University of Free State, also known as UFS Kovsies defeated UJ 58-55 in extra time to win the 2024 FNB Varsity Netball final.)

2025: Led UJ to Semi-final though being knocked out 58-28 by North-West University (NWU). Her personal accolades include 4x FNB Player of the Match, and Suzuki Player’s Player of Varsity Netball .

National: Desert Jewels defender, Goal Defender and Goal Keeper, Africa Netball Cup Swakopmund 2024.

2026: Final Varsity Netball season (Named player of the Match vs Kovsies 50-40 in Round 5, UJ remains unbeaten.)

From a small town to a global stage, Cornelia Mupenda is not just defending a goal circle, she’s defending the belief that Namibian netball belongs on the world map. Mupenda is a reflection that Varsity Netball is not just a tournament, it’s a pathway. She is studying, working in government, and playing pro, showing young girls that you don’t have to choose one dream.
