Barbados Tridents and Guyana Amazon Warriors Battle for WCPL Final Spot

The stage is set for a high-stakes showdown in the 2026 Women’s Caribbean Premier League as Barbados Tridents take on Guyana Amazon Warriors in the tournament’s playoff on Wednesday, 16 September. The crucial encounter will take place at Kensington Oval in Bridgetown, Barbados, with the winner earning the right to face the Trinbago Knight Riders in the WCPL final on 17 September.

The revamped 2026 WCPL features four teams for the first time following the introduction of Jamaica Empress. Under the new format, the team finishing at the top of the standings progresses directly to the final, while the second- and third-placed teams meet in a playoff to determine the second finalist. With Trinbago Knight Riders already securing their place in the final, Barbados and Guyana now face a winner-takes-all battle for the remaining spot. The playoff is scheduled for 16:00 South African time, giving both teams little room for error.

The winner will return to Kensington Oval the following day, 17 September at 20:00 South African time, to face Trinbago Knight Riders for the WCPL championship.

Tridents Looking to Continue Their Dominance

The Barbados Tridents enter the knockout clash with a proud WCPL history behind them. The franchise, previously known as the Barbados Royals, won three consecutive WCPL titles in 2023, 2024 and 2025 and remain the most successful team in the competition’s history.

Led by the experienced Hayley Matthews, the Tridents possess a powerful combination of Caribbean and international talent. Matthews will be one of the players to watch, particularly with her ability to influence a match with both bat and ball. Alongside her are experienced players such as Suzie Bates, Afy Fletcher and Shabika Gajnabi, while Indian international Pooja Vastrakar adds further all-round strength to the squad. The Tridents will know that their experience in pressure situations could prove decisive as they look to keep their hopes of a fourth consecutive title alive.

2026 Women’s Caribbean Premier League

Guyana Amazon Warriors will also have plenty of firepower, particularly through their impressive group of South African internationals.

Shabnim Ismail, one of the fastest bowlers in women’s cricket, brings enormous experience and the ability to change a game in the powerplay. Her pace and aggression could be particularly important against a strong Barbados batting line-up.

Chloe Tryon provides another major match-winning option. The powerful all-rounder has the ability to score quickly in the middle and lower order while also contributing with the ball. Her leadership qualities will also be important in a match where composure under pressure could determine the result.

Nadine de Klerk offers Guyana another dependable all-round option, while Tamzin Brits gives the Warriors an experienced and technically strong opening batter capable of building an innings or accelerating when required.

The Warriors’ South African contingent therefore gives them plenty of experience in high-pressure international and franchise cricket. All four are part of Guyana’s 2026 squad.


A Battle Between Bat and Ball

One of the most intriguing aspects of the contest will be the battle between Barbados’ batting strength and Guyana’s bowling attack. For Barbados, Matthews and their experienced international players will be looking to establish a strong platform, while Guyana will hope Ismail and the rest of their bowling attack can strike early.

At the other end, Guyana’s batting will need to withstand the pressure of a Barbados attack that includes experienced bowlers such as Afy Fletcher. With both teams knowing that defeat means elimination, expect an intense contest from the first ball.

The winner of the Barbados Tridents vs Guyana Amazon Warriors playoff will face Trinbago Knight Riders in the final on 17 September at 20:00 South African time. For Barbados, victory would keep alive their hopes of an unprecedented fourth consecutive WCPL title. For Guyana, it would provide an opportunity to reach the final and challenge for their first WCPL championship.

And for South African supporters, the playoff provides another opportunity to watch some of the country’s leading women’s cricketers battle for one of the biggest prizes in Caribbean franchise cricket.
