University of the Western Cape (UWC) defender Shakira O’Malley has been named in the Banyana Banyana squad for the upcoming international friendlies against Algeria (7–18 April), as the technical team continues to assess depth and consistency within the backline.
The 23-year-old defender, who was part of the squad at the recent COSAFA Women’s Championship in Polokwane, retains her place in the national setup, taking her senior cap tally to eight. Her continued inclusion points to growing trust from the coaching staff as preparations build toward upcoming continental competitions.
O’Malley’s pathway to the senior national team has been gradual but structured. Hailing from Ocean View in Cape Town, she developed through local structures at Ocean View FC before progressing to Spurs WFC, where she gained exposure in a more competitive environment.
Her development was further strengthened during her time in the United States, where she featured for the University of Northwestern Ohio and later Western Michigan University. The experience abroad provided her with exposure to higher-intensity training environments, improved facilities, and a more professional setup — elements she believes still need strengthening in the South African game.
“Overseas, there are better facilities and stronger support systems, which makes a difference,” O’Malley said. “Locally, players still face challenges like limited resources and less exposure.”
Since returning to South Africa, O’Malley has been a consistent performer for UWC, using the Hollywoodbets Super League as a platform to maintain match fitness and push for national selection. Her performances at club level, combined with her versatility and defensive discipline, have kept her in contention for national team call-ups.
“The league has improved competitiveness and consistency among players,” she noted. “It’s also helped increase the pool of players available for selection.”
Having represented South Africa at both junior and senior level — with eight caps in each — O’Malley is part of a group of players transitioning into more established roles within the senior team. The upcoming friendlies against Algeria offer another opportunity to solidify her position, particularly as the technical team continues to rotate and evaluate combinations in defence.
With the postponement of the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON), the current international window becomes even more significant for players looking to secure their places.
“It gives players more time to develop and improve performances,” O’Malley said. “It’s also another chance to push for selection.”
For now, the focus remains on short-term objectives — delivering solid performances in the upcoming fixtures and maintaining consistency at both club and international level.
