At just 19 years old, Gositang “GG” Motshegwe is already writing a story that stretches far beyond borders. From the streets of Johannesburg to the competitive fields of American college soccer, her journey is one of courage, sacrifice, and an unshakable belief in her dreams.
Now a midfielder for Hampton University Women’s Soccer in the United States, GG represents a growing wave of South African talent boldly chasing global opportunities — and making their mark.
Growing up in Johannesburg, GG’s football journey began in an uncommon yet powerful way. At just 12 years old, she broke into the University of Johannesburg (UJ) boys’ academy — a move that would test her resilience and sharpen her competitive edge early on.
“I began my soccer journey at UJ, joining the boys academy team at 12,” she recalls. “I was later moved to the women’s second team, and eventually into the first team in the Hollywoodbets Super League.”
That progression at a young age speaks volume about her determination. Transitioning from boys’ football into the women’s game, GG had to constantly prove herself — adapting, learning, and growing with every step.
Her time at UJ laid a strong foundation, but like many ambitious athletes, she knew when it was time to seek something more aligned with her vision.
“I enjoyed my time at UJ and learned a lot, but I felt I wasn’t growing in the direction I wanted.”
That decision led her to Wits University, where she continued her development while chasing promotion ambitions to the Hollywoodbets Super League. Although things didn’t unfold exactly as planned, GG views that chapter as another crucial piece of her journey.
“Throughout it all, I have aspired to play in the USA, where I could continue my education and gain exposure to reach the highest level.”
That dream, however, was never going to be easy.
“It wasn’t easy, and at times the pain seemed greater than the reward,” she admits. “But I can honestly say it has all been worth it.”
For GG, the United States wasn’t just an option — it was always part of the plan.
“Moving to the United States to study and play soccer has been a lifelong dream,” she says.
The dream was clear: a system that balances elite-level sport with education. Through her partnership with Sable International, an agency that connects athletes with global opportunities, GG was able to navigate the complex process of recruitment.
“They connected me with coaches, arranged calls, and helped me find the best fit.”
That journey eventually led her to the United States, where she initially began her college career in Arizona before making a move to Hampton University — a decision that reflects her continued pursuit of growth, both on and off the pitch.
But while the move opened doors, it also came with its own set of challenges.
“Being away from home has been the biggest adjustment,” she shares. “Everything familiar disappears, which can feel isolating and lonely.”
For any young athlete leaving home, the emotional toll can be just as demanding as the physical one. Being thousands of kilometers away from family, friends, and familiar support systems forces a different kind of strength.
“In difficult moments, it’s hard to find support because loved ones are so far away.”
Yet, GG has found comfort in the universal language of football.
“On the field, adjusting to different cultures and playing styles is challenging, but soccer helps me connect with my teammates.”
Behind every athlete is a support system that helped shape their path — and GG did not shy away to acknowledge those who played a role in her journey.
“I would credit my coaches and managers at UJ, as well as my teachers at Curro Aurora High School,” she says. “They believed in me and gave me the support structure I needed.”
That belief has carried her across continents.
Now at Hampton University, GG remains focused on consistency — both academically and athletically — while embracing every opportunity that comes her way.
“I want to make a positive impact wherever I can,” she says.
While the dream of playing professionally remains alive, she approaches it with patience and faith.
“I trust that it will unfold in God’s timing.”
But beyond club and college ambitions, there is one dream that has remained constant since the very beginning — wearing the national colours.
“Before even considering the USA, my biggest goal was to play for my national team,” GG reveals.
Having already experienced the honour of representing South Africa at youth level, she understands the magnitude of that responsibility.
“If the opportunity comes, I would absolutely want to represent my country at the highest level. It would mean everything to me.”
For GG, that dream is bigger than personal success — it’s about pride, purpose, and representing something greater than herself.
