Youth Day Spotlight Telkom’s Lasting Impact on South Africa’s Netball Talent Pipeline

As South Africa commemorates Youth Day today, the Telkom Netball League (TNL) stands tall as a testament to Telkom’s unwavering commitment to empowering young women through sport.

Beyond being a premier semi-professional competition, the TNL serves as a vital springboard for rising netball talent across the nation. Rehana Noah of the Western Cape Tornados emphasised the importance of the platform Telkom has created for young players, noting that it allows them to be recognised beyond local borders and opens doors to international opportunities

Telkom’s development pipeline begins with the Telkom Netball Championship (TNC), a national tournament for Under‑19/U18/U17 players, a prominent youth netball competition of spotting and developing the sport's future stars nationwide.

Phophi Nematangari, current captain of the South African U21 team and a proud product of TNC shared, "Youth Day reminds me that I am empowered to represent my country, play my heart out, and pursue what I love. Telkom has played a big role in my journey by giving me the opportunity to compete in the Telkom Netball League, one of the highest levels of netball in South Africa. Playing alongside some of the best players in the country has pushed me to grow and improve my game."

Designed to bridge the gap from school to university and elite club netball, the TNC has become a cornerstone of youth development, echoing Telkom’s messaging on From First Pass To Crown.

Several players competing in the TNL today are proud products of the TNC pipeline system. These athletes are a testament of how structured development and corporate support can unlock potential.

Debora Kitenge of Northern Cape Diamonds believes Youth Day is a celebration of unity, both in sport and in community. She values the sense of togetherness she experiences on the court, whether playing alongside teammates or facing opponents. As a developing player, she embraces the opportunity to learn from more experienced athletes.
